The Joys of Pregnancy

No lie, I don't LOVE this whole pregnancy deal. I find it special and there are certainly times I enjoy it and smile thinking about how amazing the process really is. However, in general, this is not the 10-month period of time I have lived for my entire life.

And truthfully, I shouldn't even admit to that. I was so blessed to get pregnant very quickly without even having to think about it. No hiccups, no trouble whatsoever. I have friends and relatives that have had a few more bumps in the road. All of this to say, I'm very thankful for the easy process and that Julia seems so healthy to this point. I am, however, about ready to wrap-up and meet the superstar. I'm tired of sharing this body of mine.

So this week I rolled into Dr. Speight's for my 28 week appointment. This was my first appointment of the third trimester. Big stuff happens this week. I signed my life away on a blood transfusion if it's necessary, a C-Section if that's what my doctor sees fit and Cord Blood Preservation to be taken care of by my doctor. You know, just the REAL stuff of this pregnancy. It dawned on me that this whole thing is going to come to an end. She's gettin out one way or another. It could be as easily as I got pregnant or it could be a very hard way and complicated. I'm hoping for the first of the two scenarios, but I am in good hands at a good hospital, so I'm not spending too much time dwelling.

In addition to the paperwork I signed, I also had blood drawn to ensure I'm still HIV negative (from the first trimester). My fingers are crossed. I have been seeing other men during this time and having crazy, wild, unprotected, mistress sex. I kid. I find it ridiculous you have to be tested again, but as of January 1 it's all a new law. I about passed out when 5 vials of blood were drawn from my arm. I made it. My only concern at this point are my Glucose results. Just hoping those come back normal and for the time being we're good as gold.

The last episode of this appointment was a RhoGam shot. Anyone had that? I am a negative blood type so I think that means I am a negative Rh factor as well. Anyhow, they had to give me this injection to ensure the baby's blood and my blood will be able to intermix during delivery. My Aunt Cindy is a fabulous Labor and Delivery nurse and gave me all the ins and outs, but I'm unsure of the exact terminology. I had the paper prescription and had to have it filled before returning to have the injection placed in my rear. The Chief and I jumped through several hoops to get this Rx filled. We'll start with the fact it's $160 and insurance won't cover a necessary item. Ridiculous. The next hoop was that it is hard to find. Finally, we had the prescription and I'm all set for my appointment. The chief took some time out of his day to pick-up the injection on his way back from a meeting on the north side of town. This was all falling into place beautifully, and I was just about ready for the appointment.

This is where it all went to hell. It came in a bag looking like this.

The inside said this.

Clint didn't look at the inside of the box. I don't blame him, I wouldn't have either.
If you don't follow those instructions the injection is no longer good.
{And yes, they do have my name spelled incorrectly.)

This guy has had a bad cold this week and the weather was pouring rain. To get to the pharmacy 45 minutes from my place of employment just wasn't going to happen.

Most days this probably would have upset me and irritated me, but being pregnant it sent me through the roof. Why in the hell didn't the pharmacy tech tell my husband that this injection needed to be refrigerated? The man had on a suit and tie, did he look like someone that typically handles injections? At noon on a Monday did he look like he was headed home to catch his favorite soap opera? No, quite the opposite. He was headed back to his office where this shot would sit un-refrigerated for the next 18 hours.

After all of this madness the problem was resolved and the injection still made it's way into my rear. All is well and for week 28 we're set.

I hope the rest of you have been smooth sailin this week. I'm about ready to kick-off the holiday weekend...with whatever plans it might hold! I'm guessing some faux beer and maybe a poolside float or two.

Change in Plans

The initial plan of keeping the sex of the baby a surprise was kiboshed in the last 24-hours.
We gave in. We threw in the towel. We decided to find out!

We had the sonographer write it down inside a card and let us keep the secret from ourselves until dinner. Yes, I fully understand we have to complicate things and switch up the typical scenario. We're like that. They're obviously prepared for this request because they have the most adorable little cards and envelopes where they can write your good news.

I think once we got back in the car after the sonogram and the regular doctor's appointment Clint was on 6 different phone calls. I sat there and stared out the window wondering WHAT ARE WE GOING TO HAVE?

We had dinner at Eddie V's and opened the card inside the bar. I won't sell-out Clint completely, but will say he was a sappy, sappy mess. He read the card and it was the sweetest thing.

Pretty sure Eddie V's sealed the deal when they brought out this decadent Bananas Foster Cake alongside Butter Pecan Ice Cream with "It's a Girl" written in chocolate. I think that might be my go-to dessert from now until eternity!

Saving the most important information for last, Baby E (aka Jules) is healthy! 10 fingers, 10 toes, 2 kidneys, 4 chambers of the heart. It's all lookin good and we couldn't be more thankful!
Thank you for continuing on this crazy journey of ours.

Whatcha got in that cup?

Not to worry, I'm back. Feelin better now that Monday's behind me. I'm coming to grips with the master plan pertaining to my house. I know you all have been worried sick!

Today I would like to share some thoughts and suggestions for drinks while pregnant. If you're not pregnant and don't plan to be skip this post entirely. It will bore you to tears. For the rest of you let me save you some heartache and leg work...and for those of you that have been through this before, WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN? Could have used some help over the last 4 months!

Here's the scoop on what I used to drink.
Morning: STRONG cup of a latte. Seggafredo Espresso splashed with some frothed, steaming milk. Perfect jump start to the day.
Afternoon: Diet Coke or Iced Tea. I like to continue just enough of the jitters to keep me going. Evening: Wine or Beer.
I would splash some water in there, but not nearly enough. Needless to say, when I became pregnant my drinking habits had to come to a halt. ALL OF THEM. That was hard. It was like going to immediate rehab and having no clue how you would manage.

After 17 weeks I have found some things to pull me through! Let's start with Starbucks. The most fabulous OB/GYN, Dr. Speight, is pretty lenient on most things, but caffeine is not one. She said even decaf Starbucks coffee was a bit much and I should only have 1/2-3/4 cup of a Tall. I just threw in the towel all together...let's face it, what is the point of decaf? I mean, really?

This little treat is the Decaf Passion Iced Tea from Starbucks. It's so yummy and is just the thing when you're just about over water.

Moving onto Zoe's. Side note, Zoe's is awesome...and all of their cheese is pasteurized, so eat up! In regards to drinks, yep, they have Decaf Diet Coke in the fountain and Decaf Iced Tea!

I'm sure you're all familiar with the non-alcoholic beers. They're not great, but on a sunny day on a patio while your husband enjoys a Michelada, it does the trick! COLD BEER (or as my uncles say, "Colbeer".) sometimes it just does the trick!

So there you go on new options in the decaffeinated, non-alcoholic drinking department. The first couple of weeks I thought I was going to cry drinking water alone. Bubbles, no bubbles, it gets old. Maybe this will help!

Cheers!!

What a weekend!

The weekend started a little early last Thursday with a 14 week doctor's appointment. It happened to be taking place just before Clint landed from his trip to Memphis. He was disappointed to miss it, but was a little settled knowing it wasn't a "big appointment". My fabulous friend, Heather, having just been through this begged to come along. I accepted because having someone listen to your child's beating heart is one of the coolest things.

Dr. Speight recommended some great food finds in Austin for our girls' trip this weekend. We also talked a little doctor gossip regarding Heather's doctor and finally....we heard little Baby E's beating heart. I am positive that is the sweetest sound to date. Everything is progressing normally, and I have the BIG sonogram April 20.

The festivities continued with a fun girls' dinner at R+D Cafe. What a fun, fun night with some great, great girlfriends! Thanks to Heather, Jana, Jennie, Jessica, Kristin and Meredith for a great night!

The weekend was filled with Warrenton, fabulous finds and a night in Austin....stay tuned for the treasures and stories from the trip!
